{"id":30027,"date":"2026-05-07T06:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-05-07T10:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/digitad.ca\/?p=30027"},"modified":"2026-05-03T23:18:53","modified_gmt":"2026-05-04T03:18:53","slug":"state-of-ai-overviews-seo-impact-quebec","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/digitad.ca\/en\/state-of-ai-overviews-seo-impact-quebec\/","title":{"rendered":"Digitad Study: What 419 Websites Revealed About AI Overviews\u2019 Impact in Quebec"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About 2 years ago, <strong>AI Overviews<\/strong> started taking over Google\u2019s SERP and, since then\u2026 <strong>Positions 4 to 10 have lost around 70%<\/strong> of their click share!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s right, 70%<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The search results page no longer holds the same value it once did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For our Montreal <a href=\"https:\/\/digitad.ca\/en\/seo-agency\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>SEO agency<\/strong><\/a> (and the businesses we work with), this raises some <em>very<\/em> real questions: <em>are people even still clicking on organic results? Is the behaviour and impact of AIOs observed in Quebec the same as in other markets (like the US)?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And most importantly, <em>where are those clicks actually going today?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u26a0\ufe0f Spoiler:<\/strong> to the Top 3 (and to AI \ud83d\ude43)! According to our study, the first three organic positions now capture almost 9 out of 10 organic clicks in Quebec \ud83e\udd2f<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And that\u2019s without factoring in <em>all<\/em> the <strong>visibility<\/strong> now happening directly inside AI Overviews (which, according to Search Engine Journal, appear on <strong>42%<\/strong> of Google queries and class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To answer this using data from our own backyard, our team of experts analyzed <strong>10.4 million clicks<\/strong> and <strong>54 million impressions<\/strong> from <strong>419 websites owned by Quebec-based SMEs<\/strong> over a 16-month period (October 2024 to January 2026).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Let\u2019s take a closer look\u2026 <\/em>\ud83d\udd0d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-study-summary\">Study summary<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Digitad\u2019s 2026 State of AI Overviews Impact on SEO in Quebec Report<\/strong> looks at how organic clicks spread across Google\u2019s first page, as AI Overviews, ads, local results and other SERP features take up more and more class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Why?<\/strong> Our SEO strategists and <a href=\"https:\/\/digitad.ca\/en\/digital-marketing-consultant\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>digital marketing consultants<\/strong><\/a> wanted to understand <em>exactly<\/em> how traffic is being redistributed in Canada\u2019s French-speaking province (using Quebec-first data, then comparing it against major US and international benchmarks).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This analysis shows that <strong>page one<\/strong> is no longer a level playing field. On its own, it captures nearly two thirds of the organic clicks observed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-position-1-ctr-has-only-dropped-by-8-since-ai-overviews-arrived-in-quebec\">Position #1 CTR has only dropped by 8% since AI Overviews arrived in Quebec<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Position #1 CTR is about 8% lower since AI Overviews arrived in Quebec. By comparison, Ahrefs and Semrush report click drops of up to 58% internationally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-zero-click-searches-rise-from-54-to-72-when-an-ai-overview-appears\">Zero-click searches rise from 54% to 72% when an AI Overview appears<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AI Overviews don\u2019t just push clicks higher up the SERP\u2026 they can also make users less likely to click out of Google! <a href=\"https:\/\/www.searchenginejournal.com\/ai-overviews-cut-organic-clicks-38-field-study-finds\/573145\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Search Engine Journal confirms our findings<\/strong><\/a><strong>: <\/strong>zero-click searches increased from 54% to 72% when AI Overviews were displayed (meaning they drive 33% more zero-click searches and 38% fewer clicks to organic links in the SERP).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-positions-4-to-10-have-lost-around-70-of-their-click-share-and-now-capture-only-10-8-of-clicks\">Positions 4 to 10 have lost around 70% of their click share (and now capture only 10.8% of clicks)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before AI Overviews arrived, these positions generally represented between 30% and 45% of click share. Today, they represent only 10.8% (about 3.5 times less than before).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-position-7-has-an-average-ctr-of-only-2-6\">Position #7 has an average CTR of only 2.6%<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Being visible on page one no longer guarantees meaningful traffic. In position #7, only about 2.6 impressions out of 100 generate a click.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-methodology-at-a-glance\">Methodology at a Glance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure analyzed Google Search Console data stored in our internal data warehouse, affectionately dubbed the \u201cBRAIN\u201d \ud83e\udde0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The data was grouped by organic position, then analyzed through two main lenses: average CTR per position and the share of page one clicks captured by each position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The study covers:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>419 websites belonging to SMEs in Quebec (Canada)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>10.4 million clicks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>54 million impressions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Both French and English websites<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Organic results on page 1 (positions 1 through 10)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The data spans over a <strong>16-month period<\/strong>, from October 2024 to January 2026 (post-AI Overviews rollout).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" snagging 63.6% of all organic clicks on page 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-interpret-this-result\">How to interpret this result<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Organic clicks haven\u2019t vanished. They have consolidated. Users are still clicking, but they\u2019re almost <em>exclusively<\/em> doing so on the very top links.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the screen gets increasingly saturated with AI Overviews, ads and local results, the same organic position no longer gets the same level of exposure it used to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;The biggest shift isn&#8217;t that people have stopped clicking. It&#8217;s that they aren&#8217;t clicking as far down the results, and they&#8217;re no longer searching exclusively on Google. They&#8217;re also turning to social media, forums, and AI engines like ChatGPT. Because of this, businesses need to be far more selective with their SEO efforts and stop treating every position on page 1 as if it holds the same business potential. This is exactly where holistic search comes into play. They mainly amplify the value of the top positions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The problem is that positions 4 to 10 can <em>still<\/em> offer visibility, but they don\u2019t bring back as much usable traffic as before, making them less profitable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That doesn\u2019t mean SEO is becoming useless (quite the opposite). SEO fundamentals matter more than ever, but Google is becoming more demanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Businesses must continue to strengthen their SEO foundations, while also adapting their tracking processes and dashboards:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A keyword no longer has the same value at the same position as it did before<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A ranking increase is only truly useful if it turns into clicks, qualified visibility or opportunities to be cited by AI<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Content must be designed to be found, understood, cited and chosen<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Strategies now need to combine SEO, GEO, long-tail keywords and brand awareness<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The goal is no longer <em>just<\/em> to be found. We use this infrastructure to centralize, compare, and analyze our clients\u2019 organic performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-analyzed-sample\">Analyzed sample<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The study covers:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>419 websites owned by Quebec-based SMEs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Both French and English websites<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>10.4 million clicks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>54 million impressions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A 16-month period, from October 2024 to January 2026<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-inclusion-criteria\">Inclusion criteria<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The analysis includes <strong>organic results on Google\u2019s first page<\/strong>, meaning positions 1 to 10<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The data was <strong>grouped by position<\/strong> to compare average CTR and the click share captured by each position<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-calculation-methodology\">Calculation methodology<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>CTR<\/strong> corresponds to the number of clicks divided by the number of impressions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Click share<\/strong> corresponds to the proportion of clicks captured by a position or group of positions compared with all clicks observed on page 1<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>For the before\/after comparison<\/strong>, Digitad\u2019s current data was compared with benchmarks published by third parties, including FirstPageSage, Backlinko, and Advanced Web Ranking<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When our data was compared to external benchmarks (whether from SE Ranking, Semrush, Ahrefs, Search Engine Journal, or others), we explicitly mentioned the source. When nothing is mentioned, the data comes from the current study presented on this page.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-biases-and-interpretation-notes\">Biases and interpretation notes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The results reflect the behaviour observed across a sample of <strong>Quebec websites<\/strong>, mainly SMEs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They should <strong>not<\/strong> be interpreted as a universal average across all SERPs, markets or industries<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>They do, however, point to a strong trend:<\/strong> the value of organic traffic on page 1 is becoming increasingly concentrated in the top positions, while middle positions generate fewer clicks than before<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-study-limitations-and-exclusions\">Study limitations and exclusions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like any study based on real-world data, this analysis should be read with some precautions, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Scope:<\/strong> The study focuses only on Google\u2019s first page (positions 1 to 10). Positions beyond page 1 are not covered.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Website type:<\/strong> The data comes from Quebec SMEs. Enterprise websites, major media outlets and very high-volume e-commerce sites may behave differently.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>AI isolation: <\/strong>Google Search Console does not yet allow users to isolate queries with AI Overviews. The study measures CTR evolution in a broader post-rollout context, without attributing every variation to a specific AI display.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Brand segmentation: <\/strong>The study does not distinguish between branded and non-branded queries, since the identification flag is not yet reliable enough in the data warehouse used.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Geographic context: <\/strong>Quebec\u2019s francophone market may be less exposed to AI Overviews than the US market. The impacts may therefore be less drastic here than in the United States.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-in-short-seo-isn-t-dead-but-page-1-is-no-longer-enough\"><strong>In Short: <\/strong>SEO Isn&#8217;t Dead, But Page 1 Is No Longer Enough<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For a long time, being on page 1 could be considered an SEO win \ud83c\udfc6<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s no longer <em>that<\/em> simple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our Montreal-based GEO agency\u2019s data shows that, in the era of AI Overviews, the \u201cnew page 1\u201d has <em>basically<\/em> become a three-spot podium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"450\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/digitad.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/winners-podium-on-google.gif\" alt=\"GIF of an athlete celebrating on an Olympic podium, illustrating how most organic clicks now go to Google\u2019s top three positions, especially the first one.\" class=\"wp-image-30004\" style=\"width:425px\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">True, top results still capture most of the clicks, but lower positions are <em>literally<\/em> getting buried by ads and AI answers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For businesses like yours, being visible is no longer enough.
